While we’re still enjoying Hong Kong’s summer sunshine (and dodging the occasional torrential rainstorm!), the time has come for the little kiddos to head back to school… and the mammoth task of getting everything prepared! Whether they are heading through the gates for the first time (hold back those tears, mama!) or are all grown up and heading to secondary school, we’ve pulled together all the essentials that are topping our lists here at Sassy Mama. From eco-friendly lunchboxes to sturdy school shoes and everything in-between, we’ll help you track down everything you could possibly need for the school year ahead!

BAGS AND GEAR

bkacPottery Barn
Last year, we celebrated as US stalwart Pottery Barn announced their international shipping service, and we think Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Teen deserve a shout-out for their Gear Up Backpacks, which come with all the latest mod cons like a built-in outlet for headphones and padded pocket for a laptop. Pottery Barn Teen also stocks coordinated lunch bags, pencil cases, homework holders, and locker accessories, all of which can be personalised.

Kipling
If your school-goer is way past carrying a koala-shaped bag around, your quest to find the perfect pack is slightly trickier. When being primary school captain is suddenly all that matters in life, an effortlessly cool backpack is required! Kipling’s collection of prime quality backpacks ticks all the right boxes. Kipling has stores in Sogo, K11 Mall, Festival Walk and Shun Tak Centre and several other locations.

Find your nearest Kipling store here.

Tiny Footprints
Tiny Footprints on Duddell Street, Central is your go-to place for eco-friendly and awesome lunch gear. We’re loving the collapsible lunchboxes which come with nifty compartments to hold utensils. Or do away with plastic altogether with Lunch Skins – these reusable sandwiches and snack bags look great with funky graphics and prints. They also stock super cute animal print lunch bags as well – we love this Juju Ladybug print!

Topshop
Head to Topshop’s Central store (as if we needed any further excuse!) and check out their range of satchels. Our favourite is the Snake Zip Front Backpack. EXTRAS

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Summer holidays = growth spurts! Head to your local tailor for any alterations to last year’s school uniform. If you have growing teenage boys, a top tip is to buy their uniform a bit big at the start of the school year and get it tailored to fit as they grow; letting the pants down every couple of months is much more cost-effective than forking out for a whole new uniform! We like Perfect Dress Alteration (Ann and Bon) at 2/F Melbourne Plaza, Central, Hong Kong. Hong Kong really does have an army of tailors around so keep your eyes peeled!

Last but not least, make sure your little ones look presentable! Book in for a trim at one of these mama-approved hair salons:

Magic Mirror
One of our go-to salons for the kiddos, these folks know how to make children feel at home. From the animal-shaped chairs to the colourful wall – everyone knows this is the ultimate fun salon! Haircuts start at $238 for boys and $264 for girls.

Causeway Bay: Shop 218, Windsor House, 311 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

Mong Kok: Shop G25, Olympian City 3, 1 Hoi Wang Road, Mong Kok, Hong Kong

Private i Garden Kids Salon
Little ones can experience a hair styling service for the stars at Private i Garden Kids Salon. There’s a fun playroom for them to settle in and get comfortable while an expert snips away at their locks. It’s all fun and games here, and nervous tots will have nary a worry, and will come out the other side looking groomed and presentable!

Kowloon Tong: Unit L2-55, Festival Walk, 80 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong

Causeway Bay: Shop 230, 2/F, Lee Gardens Two, 28 Yun Ping Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

Kowloon: Shop G5-01b, G/F, AEON Whampoa Store, Whampoa Garden, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong

Congrats, mama! You’ve filled those school bags to the brim! Now we think you deserve a reward, so check out our top pampering picks here and relax… until next term!

And a big thanks to Kate Farr and Sophie for contributing to this fab roundup!
