Take a tour of Hong Kong with Brompton Bicycles
If you’re looking for a fun new outdoor hobby, we think cycling is a great one. Mums and dads who want an adventure date or families looking to have some bonding time (and some digital detox) will love hopping on a bike and getting some fresh air. We’ve teamed up with the experts at Brompton Bicycle to get some tips on exploring our city on two wheels. We love Brompton’s handmade folding bikes because you can easily take them anywhere and they are so portable they go from flat to ferry to taxi to trail in no time!
Finding The Right Bike
Brompton is stocked at some of the top bike shops in Hong Kong, so you can be sure friendly staff will recommend which height, size and weight is right for the type of cycling you’re going to be doing. And because most of us live in tiny HK apartments, storing your bike may seem like an issue, but not with a Brompton bike – these fold up quickly and easily (in less than 20 seconds!) to a practical size (585mm high x 565mm long x 270mm wide / 23″ x 22.2″ x 10.6″), making finding space a non-issue! You’ll see that the bike’s ride position and agility will blow away conventional bikes, and the small wheels means you can get through the streets easier, and that’s one less worry when you’ve got your eye on the little ones!
Safety first, so you’ll need a helmet. But more importantly, you’ll need something to hold all those snacks, water bottles and layers, so a bag from Brompton’s luggage range is a must! Ranging in shape, size and fabric (from canvas to leather and more!) these are the perfect bags to have with you because they attach cleverly onto the bike. Have the retailers sort you out with one that will suit all your needs or take a look at them here.
Practice, practice, practice
We Hong Kongers are lucky to have some of the finest biking trails around, so if you need some inspo, keep an eye out for our top cycling trails article (coming 18 April!). Brompton’s bikes are perfect for those who live in the city because if you want to take them on the MTR they fold neatly with just a few flicks of the wrist (did we mention it takes only 20 seconds?!). Taking other bikes on the MTR is often a complicated process. Also if you live on the islands, you’ll love them, because you can easily transport them on the ferry and into a taxi without much fuss. In fact, you can fit two Bromptons in the boot of a taxi. Sorted!
The Brompton Saddle Bag and Cover (MSRP $380) fits to the back of your saddle. The bag has enough room for essentials and the cover protects your Brompton when you’re travelling. Sassy Mama readers who buy a Brompton from one of Hong Kong’s authorised dealers can claim a free Saddle Bag and Cover. (This is an exclusive for Sassy Mama readers!)
Brompton bikes are available at seven official outlets in Hong Kong and three dealer stores in Macau. Please visit brompton.com/find-a-store for store details.
